what are the qualities of the best and the worst manager you've had?

I have the worst manager right now. He's a nit-picking micromanger who doesn't let me do anything without his approval. I get people wanting me to do things right away but everything has to be cleared by him so my hands are tied. He's always right and everything has to be done his way. I'm ready to quit just to get away from him.

The best manager I had was a woman who was there for conflicts and questions but otherwise gave me my work and let me do it. She would teach you things you needed to know, not make you feel awful if you didn't know how to do something. Of course that place closed down, I think today's business world runs on jerks like my current boss. Ick.

The best manager I ever had said "good job" frequently. And though he didn't single me out in meetings when presenting reports I had prepared, he didn't take credit for them either. He didn't stay on my case all day and let me work through issues without micro-managing me.

The worst manager I worked for constantly took credit for my work, blamed me in meetings for things I wasn't responsible for, and stayed in my office all day to see what I was up to. It was impossible to do anything right with him. He never gave any positive encouragement. He thought keeping people scared for their jobs was a motivator...
