Managers in World Series looking to dish out premier hurlers in potential Game 7
Every baseball wants an exciting conclusion to the World Series and that may be the case if the St. Louis Cardinals manage to extend the tournament to Game 7 if they win Game 6 against the Texas Rangers at the Busch Stadium in St. Louis. They have been the
team in four instances out of 18 World Series in the past, to comeback from a 3 – 2 deficit in wins. Managers from both teams are not taking a chance and they conveyed their strategies for the last game on Wednesday, October 26.
The two clubs got an extra day of rest on Wednesday when Major League Baseball declared Game 6 was delayed due to rain forecast. Now both teams have their players resting for another day and that leaves a lot of room for strategy in the bullpen and the pitching
rotation.
Cards manager Tony La Russa has come out to say that Chris Carpenter may start in Game 7 of the World Series following three days of rest. That however could be a risky move.
"Three days' rest, I mean, already done that," La Russa said. "So we'd all feel better about [Game] 7 if we needed him."
The last time Carpenter pitched with three days-rest, was in Game 2 of the National League Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. He gave up four runs off five hits in three innings. He may come in to the bullpen, however.
"Depending on the score," he said, "if we were lucky enough or good enough to get up there, then you could save some protection for the next day."
On the other hand, Texas manager Ron Washington has confirmed that Matt Harrison will pitch in Game 7. However he does have Derek Holland in the bullpen with four days of rest. He pitched 8 1/3 scoreless innings in Game 4. He will be back in the line up.
"It helps tremendously," Washington said of Holland's experience, "because he has pitched in that spot before, so it won't be anything that he has to search for. He knows what he has to do to get loose, and he won't come in and be in awe of what's going
on."
Both teams are looking strong now. Fans might get to see Carpenter face off against Holland. That would be a memorable encounter.
