Cesc’s shot after a good passing move was weak and easily saved by the Manchester City goalie, and Arshavin mishit a shot well over the bar, when he did have the space. For all of the Gunners’ good work at the start of the second
half, they would have been demoralised if not for Fabianski.
Manchester City skipper Carlos Tevez weaved his way round the defence, and struck a wonderful shot, which looked destined for the back of the net, but the Polish shot-stopper of the Gunners did extremely well to divert his shot
away to only concede a corner.
Later on, Manchester City’s talismanic skipper was replaced by former Arsenal player Emmanuel Adebayor. The spectacular save of Fabianski meant that the Gunners remained in the lead, and a win was ensured when Song found the net
in the sixty-sixth minute.
It was another Arsenal classic passing move which resulted in the goal, though it was Wayne Bridge’s poor defending in the box that allowed the Cameroon international to latch on to the ball from outside of his foot. Samir Nasri
and Arshavin combined well, and Nasri tried to release Chamakh, who was in the box, but the ball was behind the striker, and Wayne Bridge could only touch the ball into the way of Arsenal’s Alex Song, who made a spectacular finish.
In the dying stages of the match, Roberto Mancini introduced his young sensation Balotelli to inject some pace to the deflated team. However, even Mario Balotelli failed to inspire Manchester City, as he took only one shot on goal
which was brilliantly saved by the Gunners’ goalie, Lukasz Fabianski.
It was a surprise that Adam Johnson of Manchester City did not feature in this match, considering he has been in red hot form in this season.
Moreover, Arsene Wenger introduced his two young sensations, Nicklas Bendtner and Theo Walcott. Both of these players were short of match fitness and were introduced to gain more playing time.
Roberto Mancini’s side looked deflated after the second Arsenal strike, and it was the Gunners who looked likely to add another before the allotted time. Arsenal impact substitute Nicklas Bendtner also managed to get his name on
the score sheet. The Danish was put through on goal by Nasri, and made no mistake in finishing off the goal. This goal surely boosted Bendtner’s confidence after having missed a large chunk of the season so far due to an injury.
Wenger looked a happy man at the end of the game, and his team were indicative of the fact that you do not need to spend millions to have a quality team.
Arsenal showed that they are capable of winning silverware this season. The Gunners continue to be a force in Barclays Premier League even without key players like Robin Van Persie and Thomas Vermaelen.
There were many positives from this match for the Gunners. Bendtner opened his scoring account of this season and will look to build on it, but the two Gunners that stole the show were none other than Samir Nasri and Lukasz Fabianski.
The French midfield magician has been electric in this campaign and proved to be the difference for the Gunners. Moreover, Arsenal’s second-choice keeper, Lukasz Fabianski, who had a disastrous last season, looked more comfortable
and has greatly improved. This surely has to be one of his best performances for the Gunners.
