Manchester City Interested In Gilks As Replacement For Given
Shay Given is set to leave Manchester City in the January transfer window and the club has started looking for replacements. Sources reveal that City are soon going to make a move for Blackpool goal keeper Matty Gilks.
According to reports, the former Newcastle keeper is set to move because of lack of first team opportunities. Given tried to fight for the place of first choice keeper for City, but he could not beat Joe Hart and has decided to leave.
Despite Joe Hart being in top form, Roberto Mancini will be on the lookout for a replacement for a second choice stopper. The City manager was at Bloomfield Road to watch the Blackpool keeper against West Brom this Monday.
The 28 year old keeper recently received a call up from the Scotland national team; he has improved his form and has been noticed by club and country alike. So much so, that he is now attracting attention from other clubs, namely Manchester City.
The Scotland international played for Rochdale for seven years before a move to Norwich City came through. He did not get a chance to make too many appearances for Norwich City and in 2008 moved to Blackpool.
Blackpool boss Ian Holloway brought out the best in him and the player thrived under his management. However, he is currently the lowest paid player at the club and recently refused to sign a new deal with the club. It is predicted that he will leave soon.
Roberto Mancini would be wise to make most of the situation, he would not have to spend a fortune on the Blackpool keeper and by offering him more money than he is currently making, Gilks would be satisfied.
It is also understood that Gilks would not have too many first team playing options at Eastlands, but the Blackpool keeper will be aware that he is moving to a bigger club and when his opportunity comes, it will be greater than anything he can achieve with
his current club.
