Manchester City Manager Roberto Mancini intends to give Carlos Tevez a rest
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has said that he would be resting Carlos Tevez in the coming week, and there are two big reasons behind his decision. The Italian said that first of all, every player needs rest and Tevez
has earned it, and secondly, he also wants to prove that Manchester City is not a one-man team.
Carlos Tevez is expected to be left out of the team for the Europa League match against Lech Poznan on Thursday. This match comes after the 3-2 win for Manchester City in the English Premier League against Blackpool where Tevez
scored twice.
The former Manchester United player has been part of City’s line-up in all but two games this season. He has also been on international duty twice and the manager has shown concerns that his player may be pushing the limits.
Mancini said that it is always great to have a man who is virtually carrying the attacking load on his own shoulders, but at the same time it is also an opportunity for the opponents to tag them as a one or two-man team. He said
that he wants to make it clear to everyone that his team does not depend on individuals, and in fact it is a team effort that has earned them such a good start to the season.
The former Inter Milan manager was also quite pleased with the performance of David Silva. The left-footer was the other goal scorer in the 3-2 win against Blackpool. Mancini said that a player like Silva is a commodity as he can
play on the wings and also in attack at the same time. He added that the experience of Silva from the Spanish league does stand him in good stead. The manager also praised the form of his Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor. Mancini said that he is confident that
these two players would be able to handle the attacking side of the game in the Europa League match. The manager also added that Tevez may be recalled to the team in the big match against Arsenal on the weekend.
Roberto Mancini said: "I will speak with Carlos and we will decide. Out of the games, there will probably be one for which Carlos will stay on the bench, because he needs to recover.
"Carlos is a key player for us, but then for us all the players did well at Blackpool. There were other good performances as well as Carlos.”
The City boss admitted that Tevez has been travelling too much due to his international commitments and may be suffering from a burnout, and it is only normal for him to earn a good rest.
Roberto Mancini also said that he would have a talk with Argentina manager Sergio Batista and would request him to give Tevez a rest in the international friendly against Brazil.
The manager added that the big problem for Carlos is that Argentina normally do not play their games in Europe, and instead they are played in places like Japan, Australia and South America. That means that players like Carlos
have to travel more than other players and excessive travelling does take a toll on players.
Roberto Mancini ended by saying that it would be good if Argentina do give Tevez a rest for a couple of games, and added that it would not only benefit Manchester City but would also be in favour of Argentina.
Manchester City are currently in 2nd place in the English Premier League (after 8 games) and trail league leaders Chelsea by 2 points.
