Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany: We can win the Premier League
Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany is upbeat about their chance to become English Premier League winners for the 1st time.
The Belgian defender has asked his teammates to repeat last week’s performance against Fulham at Craven Cottage. City beat the Cottagers 4-1 in the game. The 24-year-old believes that if they can maintain that form till the end
of the season, they can win the League. He reckons that in order to achieve that there must be consistency in their game. The Blues will face Stoke City in their next league encounter and then the high-flying Bolton Wanderers who have been a surprise package
so far.
Kompany said: “We have had a couple of good performances but this was one of a very high standard. When we came in at half-time we said to each other, this is the standard we have to expect from ourselves now for the whole season.”
He added: “The ambition of any team in the top six should be to compete with Chelsea and Manchester United. There is no reason to suggest why it would not be possible. We set a standard at Fulham, can we sustain it? My opinion
is that we can, but it will take nothing less than the same commitment for the next game.”
The Belgian believes that there is still a lot of work to be done and if other teams want to talk about the title no one can stop them from doing so. Boss Roberto Mancini has been under lot of pressure because of their back-to-back
goalless draws at home against neighbours United and Birmingham City. The Italian has managed only two wins in his last 6 games but still finds his team 4th in the table and only 3 points behind League table toppers Chelsea.
The task ahead of them will be tough, however, as they still have to face three clubs above them in their home; it will require an iron will to achieve the desired results.
The Blues and England midfielder James Milner said that the club has quality all the way but it will take some time for them to gel. Money cannot bring instant success even though their Arab owners might disagree. The Club has
spent over £300 million on new players since taking over the club and they would like to see instant results.
City - along with other clubs who have title ambitions - have been handed a lifeline recently by Chelsea because of their poor run of form. Chelsea have lost three of their last four Premier League games. The league this season
has turned out to be a very tough affair for the so-called top four clubs including Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. Because of their inconsistent form, other clubs are still in the race. The Blues are just 3 points behind joint top Chelsea
and United and their bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur who denied them a Champions League spot last season are only 6 points behind. Liverpool, after the worst start of the season in their history, are also not too far behind: they are 9 points adrift Chelsea
and Man United.
