Ajax Amsterdam’s versatile defender, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814, has performed superbly throughout the season and his good performances have not gone unnoticed. English Premier League outfit, Manchester City, are the latest team to show keen interest in signing the 24-year-old defender in the upcoming transfer market. AC Milan, Arsenal FC and Liverpool FC have already shown their desire to sign the versatile defender at the end of the 2010/11 season.
Reports confirm that the Blues manager, Roberto Mancini, is looking to add a left-footed defender to his squad in the summer transfer market. The Belgian International seems like a perfect addition to Mancini’s squad. The Italian tactician visited Rotterdam to watch the KNVB beker Cup final between Ajax and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Twente-c39233 Enschede and was impressed with Vetonghen’s performance in the back-line in spite of Ajax losing the game.
Frank de Boer, the Amsterdammers manager, has also confirmed that Manchester City have shown interest in taking the centre-back’s signature at the end of the season.
Boer said, “[Assistant coach] Danny Blind told me that Mancini was at the stadium and I know that Manchester City are interested in signing him. One and one is two.”
The 24-year-old central defender is a product of the Amsterdammers’ renowned youth academy. He has remained a vital part of the Amsterdam giants’ back-line since starting his professional career in 2006/07 season and has made well over 100 appearances for his club.
The Belgian International’s current contract with Ajax runs until the summer of 2013. Reports suggest that an offer in the region of 15 million Euros could be enough to lure the central defender away from Amsterdam Arena.
Ajax would also like to cash-in on the versatile defender in the upcoming transfer market, as Vertonghen has expressed his desire to leave Ajax at the end of the season. Moreover, the 24-year-old stopper wants to take the next step in his career by making a move to play in a top European league at the end of the season, making it difficult for Ajax management to hold on to their prized asset.
