Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini looking to spend more cash in summer transfer window: EPL News
Manchester City manager, Roberto Mancini is already flexing his muscles ahead of the summer transfer window. The Italian has told the club owners that he would need some good amount of cash in the summer to strengthen the squad and mount a serious bid for
the Premier League, and have a good run in the UEFA Champions League next season.
Manchester City need to win their last league game against Bolton on Sunday to get the 3rd place in Premier League table, which will give them automatic qualification to the UEFA Champions League and they will not have to play a pre-tournament
qualifier.
If Manchester City manage to get the 3rd spot, it will be an icing on the cake to an excellent season for the Citizens. The Manchester club ended its 35-year trophy drought by winning the FA Cup, and finishing 3rd would give them their
best league position in the Premier League era.
Recently, the Director of Football Brian Marwood and club Chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak had both suggested that the club does not need to spend too much in the summers and felt that some minor adjustments were needed to get the team right for next season.
But Mancini has made it clear that he wants to spend some money to bring in reinforcements before the next season begins.
Roberto Mancini said that the example of Tottenham Hotspur is there for everyone to see, as they could not manage to perform both, in Champions League and Premier League, which meant they finished outside top four this season. He went on to say that during
his playing days when he was at Sampdoria, they made it to the Champions League final but managed to get just 6th place in Italian league in 1991-92 season.
"In one year it is impossible to improve 200%, so we can beat http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 easily," he said. "We need to have other players. Khaldoon understands how difficult it is to win in the Champions League on a Wednesday and the Premier League on a Saturday."
Mancini went on to say that a team needs a squad with 23 or 24 excellent players in order to compete in both competitions at the highest level.
Manchester City spent 180 million pounds last summer and the UAE based owners may not be willing to spend the same amount this time around. Mancini though, is insistent that there is no way around it and they would have to bring out the cheque-books if they
want to keep winning.
When example of teams like Manchester United was put in front of Mancini, he said that they have a much better squad in terms of experience in Premier League and Champions League. He further added that Ferguson’s team has been doing it for a while now, and
Manchester City should not be compared to them for now.
