Manchester City midfielder Nigel De Jong strongly believes that City can win the Europa this season
Manchester City’s Dutch midfielder, Nigel de Jong has emphasised and insisted on the fact that Manchester City are more than just determined to win this year’s Europa League and put an end to their title drought in style.
City were looking to begin their group stage game against the Red Bull Salzburg’s away from home. Most people expected City to crumble due to the fact that they had very little to no experience on the European level, however
City went on to win by two goals to nil. What was the most notable aspect of the match was the fact that it was being played away from home and such a solid victory has left critics to think that Roberto Mancini might just have a solid team this time around,
one that can actually win something.
Nigel De Jong was reported to have said, "We expect to win something this season. Being the first one for so long, it doesn't really matter which it is,"
He also stated, "Once we have got the first, I expect a few to quickly follow. We are in four competitions and we could win any of them." and said that, "Our long-term project is to win the
league but if you look at the players we've signed, they all have the winning mentality."
When asked about David Silva, who was one of the teams most expensive signings of the summer, the Dutch midfielder was reported to have said: "I've seen quite a lot of him over the years and we are very excited to have him."
"David reads a game very well, he has a terrific left foot and is very skilful." He added.
David Silva was handed a start in last night’s game despite not performing at the levels that were expected of him, however the winger was in fine form. He went on to score the teams first goal early on in the game, which gave
them a significant hold on the game, from the opening minutes and eventually resulted in City taking home the much needed three points from the game. Silva managed to successfully repay the managers faith in him and was ecstatic following the conclusion of
the game.
The second player to score for City was, Jo. Jo was brought into the team by Mancini so that Adam Johnson could be given a break, however the Brazilian forward made the most of his time on the field as he scored the goal that killed
the game and helped City win the match.
What this match has done is show the depth that City possess. They might be a squad that was built around heaps of money, however buying the most expensive donkeys, would never win a team any titles. Mancini seems to have made
carefully thought out purchases this summer, despite spending a ridiculous sum on the players that he did eventually buy.
City are quite possibly the favourite English team in the Europa league this season, the other fan favourite team in the Europa is Liverpool. However the Reds from Anfield have fallen from grace lately and have not been as effective
as everyone expected them to be. Liverpool did manage to win their game by a score line of four goals to one, however they still looked unusually shaky throughout the game.
With City looking to go all out it would close to impossible for Liverpool to deny the team their first European cup.
