Manchester City outlook: Buying success is irrelevant as long as it is coming – EPL special
They came from behind, fired and clicked at the right time and ultimately over took the Gunners to finish at a highly respectable and a European qualification third place. That is how one can easily sum up Manchester City’s season for the 2010/11 session
of the English Premier League. But, what really turned around their fortunes?
The critics came hard at Manchester City’s revival during the last season. The club has been labelled with branded as buying success rather than earning it. Is that a fair criticism though? Most believe the contrary.
Yes, we all agree that it is sad to see the game of football turned in to a business first and then a sport later. But, that is capitalism at its best. Football stopped being a game for the fans and instead transformed in to a business for the venture capitalists.
English Premier League in its full swing and Sky’s backing to the game have been the major contributors for turning football in to a money oriented game. Right or wrong, this is a fact we all have to accept and learn to live with. Therefore, when critics blame
Manchester City as if they started it all they sound ultimately naive. Sheikh Mansour pumped money in to the club much after when football had already become a commodity.
English Premier League has been dominated by the top four clubs for a very long time. To dethrone or match any of them, it was only logical to buy top players and inject some capital to be where all other clubs can only desire to be. Manchester City conjured
up the winning formula and the Premier League is not a four club game anymore. Yes, thankfully for the fans world over.
In all earnest, it is irrelevant to the fans how the success has come, as long as it keeps coming. They will prefer trophies and awards over an instance of no capital injection into their home side. Similarly, Manchester City are more relieved and excited
in getting through to the UEFA Champions League even if it meant that Sheikh Mansour had put in a lot of money to buy the right team to get them there. Success is preferred over the lack thereof. Manchester United and Chelsea have been big spenders all along.
Therefore, if the Manchester City Club’s owner has the cash to spend then why not go ahead and do just that. It is the right team formulation that will get the club the laurels that they yearn for and nothing else. The right team is built with having the best
players. The best players can only be bought. It is as simple as that.
City are still playing catch-up to the likes of Manchester United, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 complete the old top four clubs of the Premier League. These clubs did their spending over a period of time and built themselves
to where they are now.
Manchester City’s elevation to the Europe’s elite will go a long way in translating their promotion into big money. The average earnings amount to £38.45 million Euros for the Champions League’s qualifiers. In the longer-run it will mean that Sheikh Mansour
will be able to utilise the earnings in strengthening his team.
Most clubs are not backed by their solid footing and a rich history and culture. Therefore, they will have to rely on big spending to translate into success for them. In more ways than one, Sheikh Mansour could verily be what the doctor (or should I say
referee) ordered for City. It is not imperative as to how the success comes for the City fans. They, for now, are relishing and basking in success and glory.
