Manchester City versus Wigan Athletic – English Premier League: Second half report (Part 1)
The second half of the match at Eastlands was kicked off by Manchester City and immediately the home side was on the front foot as the ball was played towards http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Micah-Richards-c25259 on the right hand side. The English full back tried to cut the ball into Wigan Athletics’
penalty area but his final delivery was weak and Al Habsi came out to gather the ball, denying the on-rushing Carlos Tevez a clear goal scoring opportunity.
In the 48th minute of the match, Wigan Athletic was awarded their first corner of the second half but http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Vincent-Kompany-c36184 headed the ball away. However, the Latics soon forced another corner out of City’s careless defense and this one almost lead
towards an equalizer for Wigan as Alcazar’s flick came off of Joe Hart’s goal post, as the score line remained at 1-0 in favour of the home side.
Wigan Athletic had a good run of possession from the 50th minute till the 54th minute but this period of dominance resulted in little goal mouth action for the visitors as the ball was given away by the Latics due to a wayward cross
by Thomas Cleverley.
In the 55th minute of the match, Vincent Kompany went into the referee’s book after the center back brought down Cleverley near the touch line for Manchester City. It was McCarthy who took the free kick and his cross was flicked on by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gary-Caldwell-c14440.
His header went over the Manchester City goal as the score line remained at 1-0 to the home side.
Wigan Athletics’ first substitution of the night came in the 60th minute of the match. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Martinez-c24468 went for the win with the Latics.
In the 61st minute, Wigan was awarded a free kick near the half way line. It was Cleverley who fired the ball in as McCarthy latched onto Lescott’s weak clearance. Wigan’s midfielder blasted a first time shot towards Joe Hart’s goal but the Englishman
showed great reflexes to palm the ball away for a corner kick as Manchester City survived yet another scare.
Wigan adapted an adventurous approach in the second half as they forced City on the back foot with their good passing build up. However, this new strategy seldom paid dividends as Wigan still found it hard to fashion any clear goal scoring opportunities
in the first 20 minutes of the second half at Eastlands Stadium.
