Manchester City’s Brian Marwood defends Manchester City Spending
Manchester City has been heavily criticised by many for their insane spending spree in the summer that saw them spend 130 million pounds and bring in some big names to the club.
Brian Marwood has come out in defence of his team’s spending, and said that in the future the club would not need to spend similar amounts of money.
The players that were brought to Eastlands in the summers were; Jerome Baoteng the German midfielder who impressed one and all in the World Cup. David Silva the Spanish left sided midfielder who although did not have too
much of a look in at the world cup but still has been a seasoned player for Valencia over the years. Yahya Toure was another player imported from Spain, Yahya has for last few years been one of the most important cogs in the Barca set up. Next in line was
Aleksandar Kolarov, but the two deals that took a good amount of time and attracted a good amount of publicity were Mario Balotelli from Inter Milan and of course James Milner from Aston Villa. The total sum of spending since Sheikh Mansour took over the
club has reached £326.8million.
In recent weeks in an official financial statement the club announced financial losses worth 121 million pounds. In terms of the club owner Mansour it may not be a problem, as money is never an issue with the billionaire
oil businessman. However it may actually be a problem for Manchester City if they want to fall under the financial regulations set by UEFA for teams who compete in Champions League. After all, playing in Champion’s League is one of their biggest aims this
season.
According to UEFA regulations the clubs participating in the tournament should not suffer losses of more than 39 million, and should also be breaking even to be eligible for participation.
While talking to a British newspaper the chief football administrator Marwood stood by his team’s policy of spending big money, and said that no such big expenditures would be needed again.
"Now the intensity of signing players is levelling off, allowing this group to build and develop - they haven't gelled yet," he said.
"We have fast-tracked a lot; we need to put the structure in place. We talk about elite development, the academy, because that is the foundation. That is the future for Manchester City."
Marwood said that the purchases of the club in the last two seasons has got them a squad that is young and has a lot of potential. He added that in years to come all they would need is some tinkering here and there and they
would be good to go. Marwood said that the big buys made in the summer were not random and a lot of planning had gone into the whole thing. Marwood said that he had number of discussions with Mancini before the summer window opened and it was all part of a
big plan. He went on to say that apart from Yahya most of the players that were brought in are young. There has been an emphasis put on making sure that there is a right balance in the squad, with foreign and English as well as young and experienced players
in the squad.
Marwood further commented on Yahya Toure and said that Yahya is almost in the same mould like Patrick Viera. The former Arsenal captain was signed to serve the same purpose but he seems to be heading towards his twilight
years so it was integral to bring in a player who can do exactly the same job, but for a longer period of time.
Marwood finished by saying that Toure is just an example of how much thought goes into buying players and making a squad, so people who have been questioning Manchester City should wait and give the team proper time to justify
the spending.
