Manchester City defender, Joleon Lescott, has claimed that the Sky Blues are now strong enough to mount a serious challenge for the 2011/12 Barclays Premier League title. Lescott’s comments come on the back of a successful season for City; one which saw
them secure a place in the UEFA Champions League as well as their first major title in more than 30 years.
Now that the club has broken their trophy draught, Joleon Lescott believes that more glory will follow. Speaking on the matter, the defender said, “We will believe we can win the (Premier League) title. We are playing some good stuff and teams will have
to be more fearful when they play us. Our objective was to finish fourth and as it got closer to Christmas we were still in the title race. But we had a good run to the (FA) Cup semi-finals, beat Manchester United, and the final speaks for itself."
Manchester City are reaching higher heights with every passing season. Ever since Sheikh Masour took over the club in the summer of 2008, there seem to unlimited funds at the manager’s disposal. A player’s price has not been the issue for the City bosses.
The problem has been in attracting the big names to the Eastlands. However, now that the Sky Blues have secured their place in the Champions League, they will be able to buy a grade above their current crop of players.
However, Lescott is not worried about the added competition that a new signing will bring. He said, “At City, we are expected to win. Obviously, to progress, the club will need to buy players, and if that means them buying a centre-half so be it. I will
have to fight for my position.”
That’s not to say that the current squad is weak. In fact, Manchester City have arguably the strongest squad in the Premier League today. The Sky Blues have laid the foundation for success thanks to their phenomenal finish to the 2010/11 Barclays Premier
League campaign. They also won their first piece of silverware in more than three decades in the form of the FA Cup, and Lescott believes that things will only get better from here.
Manchester City finished the 2010/11 Barclays Premier League campaign in third place.
