Manchester UK Cell Phone / Mobile Phone?

Question

I'm moving to Manchester from the US for graduate school soon. I will be there for a little over a year, and I would like a cellphone plan that would allow me to make calls within the UK, but that would also allow me to keep in touch with family and friends back in the States. As I will only be there for a year, I would prefer something without a long term contract...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

just get a "Pay as you go" Tariff.

Orange do a good tariff that allows you to call the US relatively cheap, and also, calls and Texts within the UK are fairly Cheap
