Manchester United's goal-keeper Edwin Van Der Sar offered a coaching role at Ajax: Eredivisie News
Manchester United goalkeeper, Edwin Van Der Sar, has been offered a coaching role by his former employers, Ajax.
Van Der Sar is set to retire from professional football come the end of 2010/11 season. However, the Dutchman is still undecided of his post-retirement plans.
Ajax’s head coach, Frank De Boer, who was Van Der Sar’s team-mate when he used to play for the Dutch side, has offered him the goal-keeping coaching role at the club. However, if any deal is to take place, all the involved parties will have to wait until
the summers of 2012.
The former Fulham shot-stopper wants to wait before returning to the club where he won four league titles, three domestic cups, UEFA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
A source close to the club told the reporters, “There is a possibility he could take up the offer this summer but it is more likely that he will take a year off and spend some time with his family before going back into football .Van der Sar has not made
his mind up yet as he has a few other things on the table.”
The Dutch international last month revealed that he has many options to consider, as a number of clubs have approached him for a coaching role and also commercial roles.
It is highly unlikely United's manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, will let him go, as he has offered his legendary players a role in the backroom staff in the past. Ferguson has always spoken of the Dutchman’s inspirational attitude and with United set to sign
a new keeper. The manager would want Van Der Sar to spend some time to groom him.
Van Der Sar is expected to start in the first of the two-legged semi-final of the UEFA Champions League against Schalke 04 at the Veltins-Arena on Tuesday, April 26, 2011. The goal-keeper is still one of the main components of Sir Alex Ferguson’s team and
has played a huge role in the club’s success over the years.
