Manchester United News: Rio Ferdinand credits teammates for club’s resurgence; Anderson signs
extension deal
Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand has credited his teammates for the club’s resurgence to claim the top spot in the English Premier League.
United secured the league leadership after defeating Arsenal FC 1-0 in an enthralling encounter at Old Trafford on Monday night.
The Red Devils have scored 14 points off their last 6 games, a form better than any other Premier League side.
United are also the only team in English top-flight football to remain undefeated in the league so far this season.
Ferdinand, who won the man of the match prize on Monday, was of the opinion that his side’s rise in the domestic league was due to the hard work and concentration of his fellow players, rather than a stroke of good fortune.
He said, “When I look around the changing room I see a fantastic bunch of players. I never doubt them or what they are capable of. If we concentrate and are focused on doing the things we are asked, we are difficult to play against.”
Rio’s partnership with Nemanja Vidic at the heart of the defence has been the key to United’s recent success. The pair once again stood solid against the threat posed by Arsenal’s attacking players and managed to register yet another clean sheet.
Meanwhile, Brazilian midfielder Anderson has penned down a new deal which will keep him at Manchester United until at least 2015.
The 22-year-old was quite pleased on making the contract extension and expressed his wish of winning more silverware with the English giants.
Anderson arrived at Old Trafford from FC Porto in the summer of 2007 for a reported fee of €30 million. Since joining the Red Devils, the midfielder has won 2 Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League winner’s medal and the Football League Cup.
He said, “This is the best club to be at and I would like to thank everyone for the great support I have received over the years. I am looking forward to winning many more trophies with this club and I am so pleased to have signed a new contract.”
Alex Ferguson was also happy for the South American and stated that the player had shown remarkable improvement under his management.
Anderson has made 60 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils so far. Although, he has not been able to establish himself as a regular starter for the side, the Brazilian is always willing to play his heart out whenever he is given a chance by the manager.
