Manchester United News- Sir Alex Ferguson believes in Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney had the most disappointing World Cup campaign this year, when he played for his side’s humiliating campaign in South Africa. The Reds striker could not score a single goal in the World Cup, while he was considered as the favourite to win the Golden Boot award in the tournament.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson however trusts Rooney’s ability and believes he would be able to shake off the disappointment of the World Cup. He expects Rooney to make a comeback when he plays for his club in the new season. He admitted that Rooney would be upset with his performance at the World Cup, as he missed on a big opportunity to make a mark on football history. Rooney never looked like the player he is with United, and was frustrated and confused whenever he played for England at the World Cup. He had an impressive qualifying campaign with the Three lions, where he scored 7 times in 10 matches. He however, could not fire at the right time, and the English were eliminated in the second round by Germany. Rooney was in red hot form for United, as he scored 34 times in all competitions for the club. He did not let the club miss Ronaldo and Tevez, who left the club. He was the best player of the Premier League and was awarded with the PFA Best player of the year. He was the mainstay in United’s campaign, where they finished 2nd in the league; just one point behind champions, Chelsea.
Manchester United would be without Wayne Rooney’s services in the opening pre-season friendly against Celtic, which the manager claims to be “particularly difficult”. Rooney is currently on a holiday with his family and is expected to return on the 28th of July.
The manager is convinced that the striker will leave the World Cup memories in South Africa, and come back a refreshed and completely focused player. It would be unwise to live with the disappointing World Cup memories, as that would ruin his current form which is important for Manchester United. Rooney acted as the club’s inspiration last season, as United found it difficult to win in matches where Rooney was unavailable owing to injuries.
Ferguson said: "I don't expect a hangover. I think there'll still be a bit of disappointment in the lad.
He added that many of the players from his squad will come back disappointed from their respective World Cup campaigns, as they may have not achieved what they aimed for. France Captain Patrice Evra would be devastated from a first round exit of his national side. However, the manager expects all the players to come back fully fit and focused on the job at hand. He added that since the World Cup comes once every four years, it does not give the players a chance to nullify their mistakes like they can in the League and other competitions.
United aims for an unprecedented 19th league title, as they are currently tied on 18 each with arch-rivals Liverpool. Defender Nemanja Vidic would also be disappointed with his campaign, as even though his side defeated the much stronger Germans, they failed to make it through to the next round. Ferguson however was looking forward to one player who had a fantastic World Cup, and that is United’s new boy, Javier Hernandez. Hernandez signed with United prior to the World Cup, and made an instant impact for his national side Mexico. He scored two goals for his side, against gigantic oppositions in the form of 1998 winners France as well as two time World Champions Argentina. Ferguson therefore expects the Mexican to make a positive impact on the squad, as he stated that the player did extremely well and surprised everyone with his talent. He was the fastest player of the tournament, according to FIFA, and is the perfect man to fill the void left by Ronaldo and Tevez in the 08/09 season.
