Manchester United News: Sir Alex Ferguson confirms Wayne Rooney's exit request
In a major turn of events, Manchester United manager has confirmed that Wayne Rooney has expressed his desire to leave Manchester United. The big news would add more fuel to the ever growing speculation that Rooney may be heading
to Real Madrid or Manchester City in the next transfer window.
Sir Alex Ferguson was talking ahead of the team’s Champions League encounter, and said that he was shocked and disappointed to get the news. However, he made it clear that there were no problems between him and his striker. Ferguson
said that the whole management is simply bemused and fails to understand the logic behind his decision. He added that the door is still open for Rooney and confirmed that Wayne would not be part of the team in the Champions League match on Wednesday against
Bursaspor after he was stretchered off during training.
The 24-year-old suffered some damage in his ankle and had to be stretchered off from the training pitch.
The future of the Manchester United striker has been making headlines all over in the last few days; the whole issue was instigated by the news that Rooney decided not to sign a new contract at old Trafford. The current contract
for Rooney runs out at the end of next season.
While talking to MUTV ahead of the UEFA press briefing, Ferguson said that he had been informed by the club’s Chief Executive David Gill that Rooney had declined the offer to sign a new contract in the summer.
"I was in the office on 14 August and David phoned me to say he (Rooney) wasn't signing a contract," said Ferguson.
"I was dumbfounded. Only months before he was saying he was at the greatest club in the world."
When Ferguson got to know about Rooney’s desire to leave, he said that he wanted to have a talk with him. He added that it was always going to be integral from then on as to how he dealt with the situation.
The Manchester United manager said that after he had said that he wanted a meeting with Rooney, his agent said that Wayne just wants to leave and he has made up his mind. Ferguson added that one thing that he did tell Wayne was
to respect the club and he does not want any nonsense from him.
‘Fergie’ went on to say that he does not know the exact details as to why he made that decision, but he would look into the details. However, he reiterated that there is no truth to the claims that there was spat between him and
Rooney.
The man who has been in charge of Manchester United for more than two decades said that Rooney’s decision is, in simple words, disappointing, because everyone at the club has done everything they can to help the boy.
Ferguson went on to say that he has always been there for Wayne, and has given him advice in every aspect of the game. Therefore, it does baffle him that he would not come to him before making such a big decision.
The manager went on to say that it was never an exception for Wayne and he has done that for all his players. He added that players like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes have been at the club for almost 2 decades and they have had their
ups and downs but have been able to work it out.
In the end, Ferguson said that the door remains open for Rooney and it is up to him to make the final call.
