Manchester United Set To Sign Lindegaard
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson recently confirmed that a deal was almost complete, which would bring Anders Lindegaard, the Danish goalkeeper, to Old Trafford. Ferguson has been keeping an eye on Lindegaard for a while, wanting to bring him
in as a backup keeper for Edwin Van der Sar. The first choice Dutch keeper is 40 years old but still going strong; however, Ferguson wants to have a suitable replacement for when Van der Sar decides to retire.
The young Danish keeper currently plays for Norwegian side Aalesunds but has been watched by Eric Steele, the Manchester United goalkeeping coach, several times. According to sources Steele has travelled to watch him on a number of occasions and has been
pleased with Lindegaard’s performance. He has shown room for improvement and development and that is exactly what Ferguson has been looking for while searching for a suitable goalkeeper.
Peter Schmeichel, the Manchester United goalkeeping legend, said last week that he did not think Lindegaard was good enough to be a part of the Manchester United squad. Despite United not being in good form this season, Van der Sar has continued his excellent
performance for the club and looks to be going strong for another season or two. Schmeichel felt that Lindegaard does not possess the necessary requirements to feature for Ferguson’s side.
Ferguson said while speaking to reporters ahead of the Champions League clash with the Rangers, “It is not completed at the moment but there has not been a hiccup either. It will probably happen in the next two or three weeks, but the announcement (by
Aalesund officials) was a bit premature.” The United boss is hopeful that he will acquire the services of the 26 year old in the upcoming two or three weeks.
The 26 year old Danish international joined his current side Aalesunds on loan from Odense, but after impressing them he earned himself a three year deal. Even though the deal was long term, a three year contract, he is expected to move to Old Trafford for
an expected £3.5 million in the upcoming January transfer window. United are not in the market for any other players and will be eager to secure the services of Lindegaard.
