Manchester United Transfer News: Hernandez rumoured to join Valencia, United sign Luke McCullough
Javier Hernandez, the extremely fast and impressive Mexican forward, was signed by Manchester United in April 2010. He officially became a Man United player on 1st July 2010, and was impressive in his World Cup campaign. Many of the Red Devils’ fans are excited about the Mexican, and a lot is expected from him. Many fans cannot wait to see him in action for the ’Devils, and would be hoping to wear his number when the new kit is finally unveiled.
Manchester United signed the Mexican owing to their poor performance in the league when their main striker Wayne Rooney was injured. United failed to win many games in which Rooney was not available, and signed Hernandez before the FIFA World Cup 2010 had started. He stood out in the World Cup, having scored against heavy Argentina as well as 2006 finalists France (He scored two goals in the four matches he played). Hernandez caught Man United’s eye back in October 2009, and Man United’s Chief Scout Jim Lawlor then went to Mexico for three weeks to review the progress of the player. He filed a positive report for the player, and he was officially signed in April 2010. Hernandez was impressive in his last season at Chivas, scoring 21 goals in 28 appearances, and was therefore selected in the Mexican National side. He has scored 9 international goals in just 16 appearances so far in his short career. He has scored against some top sides, including Netherlands, France and Argentina. He was the only scorer in the Round of 16 when his side lost to Argentina 3-1.
However, it has been rumoured that Hernandez may not play for his new club this season, with a season long loan at Valencia being the main cause. Valencia is in a dire financial crunch, and has already sold David Villa (Barcelona), David Silva (Manchester City) and Nikola Zigic (Birmingham City) to improve their financial conditions. Valencia would therefore need a proper attacker as they bid for the Champions League this season, and Hernandez may be that attacker. Both the clubs have been quiet on this front, and only Hernandez’s father has issued a statement. He claimed that the loan deal may be positive for his son, as he could adapt to the European style of play. He was vocal about the fact that Manchester United are yet to decide on the matter and maybe the loan deal will help Hernandez adapt and play a better season when he debuts in the Premier League.
Sir Alex Ferguson came under heavy fire from fans and supporters when he failed to sign “suitable” replacements after his two top players, Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez, left the club. He was criticized for not signing new players, and was perhaps the biggest reason why United failed to win the Premier League this year (Chelsea are the champions for 2009-2010). It may be said that the loan may be a good idea, considering the sheer amount of options they enjoy, but the thing that needs to be emphasized here is that “are the replacements good enough?”
In other news, Manchester United signed Northern Ireland U-17 Captain Luke McCullough. He plays in the centre-back position. He signed a two year deal with the Red Devils. Although he has been a long-time fan of the fierce rivals of Man United, Liverpool, Luke stated that he can get over that. He claimed that it would be any boy’s dream to play for any English side, and Manchester United is just the best. He praised United’s facilities and standard of players, and stated that it was better than any other place he had visited. Manchester United is known for its player development over the years, with players like David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs climbing out of the ranks at Old Trafford. He therefore said that he would have to forget the Liverpool liking for now. He added that it was a great feeling to sign for such a club, and it would be a great achievement for any Northern Ireland player to play at Manchester United.
