Manchester United beat Liverpool 1-0 in FA Cup
Manchester United knocked out Liverpool from the FA Cup as they beat their age old rivals 1-0 at home. This was the first game for Liverpool with Kenny Dalglish in charge, and, needless to say, it was hardly the perfect start.
The game did not start on a good note for Liverpool. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dimitar-Berbatov-c11254 immediately made his way into the Liverpool box and got to the bye-line when he was tackled by Danniel Agger. The Referee wasted little time in calling the foul and Liverpool were left
complaining to deaf ears. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Pepe-Reina-c29672 in the bottom right corner.
Liverpool reacted well to the goal and displayed much aggression in retaliation. In the 10 minutes after Liverpool conceded the goal, the fans sensed the spark in the Liverpool lineup that had been missing for quite a while. The midfield was especially very
impressive with Steven Gerrard and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Raul-c30652 Marales in charge.
Even though Liverpool dominated the possession for the next few minutes, there were hardly any clear-cut chances for the Reds to score. The Manchester United defence was tested and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707 at the edge of the area.
Maxi Rodriquez and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Tomasz-Kuszczak-c35329 had to push himself to palm them away. The game seemed to be turning into a serious contest but Manchester United managed to hold on to its lead till the end.
Replays clearly indicated that Gerrard did not have to do what he did which made the Referee sound the whistle. He went into http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Carrick-c25282 with a two footed sliding tackle, and that too with his studs showing. Howard Webb, who had earlier been booed by
the Liverpool fans for giving the penalty, gave it some thought but correctly showed Gerrard the Red card.
Manchester United didn't even have to build up pressure to score and now had the edge of being a man up with more than half of the game still left. Just before half time, Manchester United got a corner and, as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jonny-Evans-c19085 rose highest to get to the ball,
his powerful header looked destined for the back of the net, but he was denied by the right post.
After the break, Manchester United really started to make the one man advantage count, and there were waves after waves of attack directed towards the Liverpool defence.
Javier Hernandez, who had been handed a start following the injury to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Rooney-c36736, really started to impose himself in the 2nd half. He went close with a header from a cross that was sent in by Berbatov, but couldn't make it.
Liverpool did not give up and continued to fight with 10 men on the field. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809, that
free kick was the closest they came to levelling the score.
Manchester United managed to hold on for the win; the match did not see them playing their famous dominating style football, but they got the job done nevertheless.
