Manchester United boss says he will not take Wigan Athletic lightly
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says he will not take the threat of Wigan Athletic lightly when the sides meet at Old Trafford on Saturday 20 November.
Wigan are currently sitting in 17th place in the EPL table, just one point ahead of 18th place Birmingham City in the relegation zone, but if Ferguson has learned anything from his time as a top football manager, it is to expect the unexpected.
He told radio station Magic 1152 that while Wigan's results are inconsistent, he believed manager Roberto Martinez was capable of helping them to turn the corner and start winning more regularly. As a result, he believes the Latics can cause his side problems
and is preparing appropriately.
Ferguson said that: "There is a bit of inconsistency about them but they are capable. They beat Tottenham at their place, had a good result against West Bromwich Albion and drew with Liverpool. I think (Martinez) gets the rewards by sticking to his philosophy.
He sticks by what he believes in and that’s good. It shows he has strong management and I think his players now believe in him too."
As United are the only undefeated team in the EPL, they will be heavy favourites for the game but Ferguson's men have also struggled to turn draws into wins and have seen seven of their 13 league games so far end in stalemates, adding to the unpredictability
of this EPL season.
Ferguson added that: "There are surprise results coming about. We saw some evidence of that last season and it has been the same this season. People make a story about us being undefeated, but we’ve thrown points away, whereas last week (in the 2-2 draw
with Aston Villa) we stole a point."
