Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has hailed his team’s performance following their historic win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final.
It was United’s first win at Stamford Bridge since 2002 and they played some outstanding football to earn the victory. Rio Ferdinand believes that his team’s domination in the possession of the ball helped them triumph over Chelsea.
Ferdinand said, “To get the ball and keep it. The first half we retained the ball quite well, not so much in the second half. You have got to come to places like Stamford Bridge and defend well if you want to come out with anything. Today, every single one
of the players defended with great intensity.”
Manchester United, who welcomed back Rio Ferdinand and Rafael from the injuries, levelled Arsenal’s record from the 2005-06 season of keeping the most away clean sheets in a season by managing a fifth clean sheet of the campaign against Chelsea.
Despite Chelsea’s strong start of the match, United managed to keep the home side silent for the full 90 minutes. The United defence proved to be brick wall against Chelsea’s strings of attacks and were paid off with a crucial clean sheet.
United sealed the victory with a first half strike from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Rooney-c36736. The English striker continued his impressive goalscoring form after scoring a hat-trick in United’s remarkable comeback win over West Ham United on the weekend.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ryan-Giggs-c31985, who did enough to overlap Jose Bosingwa and entered the penalty box. The Welsh winger then played a low cross towards Wayne Rooney who placed the ball on the far corner
to give United a one-goal advantage.
Manchester United have now only conceded two goals in the UEFA Champions League, which also includes an own goal from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wes-Brown-c36791 against Marseille in the last round.
The Red Devils are now favourites to qualify for the semi-final of Champions League as they have never lost a European tie after winning the first leg. The second leg between Manchester United and Chelsea will be played at Old Trafford on 12 April, 2011.
