It has been reported that Manchester United’s manager, Alex Ferguson has decided to join the race to land Portuguese international, Fabio Coentrao. The player had been heavily linked with Real Madrid, over the course of the last few days, but it seems like
Ferguson has decided to test his luck against the Spanish team and try to beat them to the punch.
The left-back, who tends to help out in the attack along with the defence, had become the talk of the town once the January window opened and it seems like he might finally be on the move. The player has been performing rather brilliantly over the course
of the last eighteen months with Benfica and even helped the team complete a double. Coentrao also held the honours of being the only Portuguese player during the FIFA World Cup 2010, to actually perform way above expectations. As a result, it is no coincidence
that two of the biggest names in football are looking to secure his signature.
One of the primary reasons for Alex Ferguson to land the Portuguese international, is that he needs a long term replacement for Partice Evra. This is why the manager has gone on to identify the twenty two year old to be the player to be the player to replace
the French full-back.
What has made the move for Coentrao all the more likely, is the fact that Benfica are reported to have already started to look for his replacements.
There were rumours linking Evra with a move away from Old Trafford and as the current situation stands, if Coentrao is to come in to the club it could spell the end of Evra’s reign at Old Trafford.
Coentrao is currently being valued at around eighteen to twenty million pounds by the footballing experts and that is a fee United can afford.
It is now going to be a wait for the next few days to see if United actually capitalize on the opportunity in the near future, or decide to wait till the summers to make the kill.
