Manchester United executive David Gill looking forward to the clash with Benfica – Liga Sagres News
Manchester United’s executive director David Gill says that he is looking forward to the UEFA Champions League clash with Benfica, tough opponents whom the club faced in the 1968 European Cup final and several times after that.
The Red Devils have been drawn in a relatively easy group, where the only minor hindrance will be in form of Portuguese giants, Benfica, who qualified for the competition after securing a 5-3 aggregate victory over http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Twente-c39233.
United have encountered the Eagles in the past, with the most famous fixture taking place at Wembley as the 1968 European Cup final. While the Manchester outfit cruised to a 4-1 win that historical day, David Gill believes that an encounter between the two
have always been a big occasion.
"We had great games against Benfica in the past. We have seen Sir Bobby Charlton put them on our way in the draw. It is poetic justice that we will face them,” he said.
Gill also said that he was looking forward to hosting the Reds at Old Trafford, while the return trip to Portugal would also be an exciting for him.
“We look forward to these two games, returning to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984 will be a great time."
Lastly the former G-14 vice-chairman added that after securing the services of Ashley Young, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-de-Gea-c10463 over the summer transfer window, the English Premier League winners are content with the quality of their current squad and will not
be availing any further recruits.
"I think that will stop. We trust in the squad we have at our disposal,” David Gill was quoted as saying after the UEFA Champions League draw.
Besides Benfica, Manchester United face-off against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Basel-c39079 and Romanian champions, Otelul Galati in the group stages of the prestigious competition.
However, the Lisbon-based side are the only ones armed with quality players like http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Axel-Witsel-c7029, making them the only real challengers in the group.
