Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar relishing trophy celebrations
Edwin Van der Sar, the veteran goal keeper at Manchester United, admits that he just cannot wait to once again hold the Premier League trophy next weekend at Old Trafford. The Dutch goalkeeper, who is in his final season for United and has made it clear
that he will retire after this campaign, is delighted to have the opportunity to end his career on a high.
The former Ajax player did not make an appearance in the United eleven in the last game against Blackburn http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rovers-c40385, where Red Devils finally secured the title. Thomas Kuszczak filled in and had a questionable night out at Ewood Park in goal for United.
Manchester United failed to win the game, but managed to hold on for a draw and got the one point that they needed to secure their 19th league title.
Manchester United will be awarded the trophy at home when they take on Blackpool in the final game of the season. Van der Sar said that he is relishing the prospect of being able to thank the home fans in his last game at Old Trafford with the trophy in
his hand.
The United shot-stopper said while speaking to reporters, "It feels different if you don't play, Still, I have played 33, 34 matches or something, so it's great. The feeling comes more when you get the trophy in your hands. To get it in front of 75,000 fans
at Old Trafford, it will be an amazing feeling I think."
It is no secret that the current Manchester United squad is not the best they have had over the years, but at the same time, effectiveness on the pitch is what matters and by securing the title they have shown that they can get the job done.
Van der Sar admitted that the current crop may not be the best of all time, but at the end of the season when the team lifts the trophy, everyone will forget that and only remember that United won the league once again.
"In certain games, we didn't play that well or didn't get results we wanted away from home. But when you have won the league, it doesn't matter how many points you are ahead of the other teams." He added.
The former Fulham keeper said that the current team at Manchester United have players with big hearts and ability to perform on the pitch. He added that there have been times this season when inspirational performances were needed in big games, and those
performances came from unlikely sources.
The 41-year-old said that when he is in the ground, he obviously does not have the time to look around and enjoy the atmosphere as his focus is solely on the game. But as he was sitting in the stands he looked around the ground and closely observed the cheering
fans and heard their songs.
With Edwin Van der Sar due to hang his gloves at the end of the season, he will have plenty of time to sit in the stands or in his living room to enjoy United’s matches. But one thing is for sure, he will leave behind a void which will not be easy for Sir
Alex Ferguson to fill.
