Manchester United goalkeeper Van der Sar confident his team will bounce back after FA Cup loss
Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar insists that his side will bounce back from their FA Cup disappointment. The Red Devils were recently dealt a huge psychological blow when they were knocked out of the prestigious cup competition by arch-rivals
Manchester City on Saturday.
Van der Sar admits that the FA Cup exit was a bitter pill to swallow, but he is adamant that United will recover quickly from the setback. He claimed that even though his side’s treble dreams have been shattered, the Red Devils will be showing no signs of
regret when they face Newcastle in the Premier League on Tuesday night.
Asked whether United would be able to keep their spirits up for that crucial encounter, Van der Sar said, “It won't be difficult to pick ourselves up. We know how important the league is. We are in first position, so we just have to make the best of it.”
He added, “We were a little bit tired (on Saturday against Manchester City). The pace of our game was not quick enough. We have played a big number of games in the last three or four weeks and against Newcastle we must do better."
Though none of United’s players ever admitted the fact, the Red Devils were desperate to win the treble this season. Their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the semi-finals has surely had an effect on their mentality. However, Van der Sar claims that the
United camp is as focused as ever. The goalkeeper believes that the Red Devils have enough strength to overcome whatever obstacle they face.
The veteran goalkeeper said, "You need mental strength in certain games when you keep conceding in the last minute or the ball is not going in. It shows the strength of character and the belief this manager has in the quality of his team that we were able
to come through those moments."
Manchester United are still on track to win a record 19th Premier League crown, especially since they are leading the Premier League standings by six points.
