Manchester United has lost its killing touch - Sir Alex Ferguson
Things have not been great for Manchester United this season. Their manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has come out blaming his players for throwing away matches in the end, which has resulted in a series of bad results.
The season started with the Community Shield, as Manchester United faced Chelsea in a tough battle. However, United emerged victorious in the match, winning 3-1 in the end. This gave an impression that Manchester United would be the biggest threat to the
defending champions Chelsea in the current season. However, as the season started, Chelsea went on blistering their opponents, losing only one match against Manchester City. United, on the other hand, has produced some bad results, including four draws in
four away games.
The first draw came against Fulham, when Manchester United players were stunned by a late equaliser from their opponents. Again, against Everton two late goals in injury time saw United’s lead of two goals being neutralized within seconds. Against Sunderland,
Manchester United was extremely unimpressive, as they failed to find the net and the match ended on level scores. After the match, Ferguson showed his disappointment with the result, urging his players to find their killer instinct.
Chelsea, on the other hand, is feeling no problems whatsoever. They have won six of their seven matches, scoring many goals in establishing their lead. They are already five points clear of United, who sits in third place in the English Premier League table.
Although, there is a long time to go in the season, with a lot of matches in hand, however, it seems that title race is already over. This is becoming obvious from the level of playing being showed by both these clubs at the moment.
Sir Alex Ferguson has come out to speak against his players once again. He said, during a press interview, that his players have lost their killer instinct that led them to win three titles in a row from 2006-2009. In most of the matches, Manchester United
was leading the match, but they threw away their lead without giving a proper fight. Especially, in the closing minutes, United’s defenders have suffered from a loss of concentration giving their opposition their chance to rally and find equalising goals.
Ferguson also talked about the Everton game, which was his biggest disappointment of this season. He said that his team had chances to score more than three goals, but instead it was their opposition who took their chances. United, on the other hand, wasted
the chances that came their way in the match. The same problem is being faced by Ferguson’s side in other away matches, which seems to be their biggest problem to handle.
Apart from that, Ferguson was happy with his team’s ability to score goals. Already, his team has scored three goals against Liverpool, Everton, West Ham and Chelsea in the Community Shield. The real problem is protecting their lead for the ninety minutes
of the match. But, Ferguson believes that every team should drop points at one stage or the other, however, the points should not be dropped in an easy fashion. Rather, the opposition must be made to work hard for their point.
Nevertheless, Ferguson is right in pointing out the problems regarding his team. However, there are many other issues affecting his team as well, but he is not gracious enough to point those problems out. This season, Ferguson has been experimenting a lot
with his tactics and team selection, which has not proven fruitful for him. Also, he seems to have little options regarding his midfield, which bounds him to certain extent as well.
Maybe, it is Ferguson’s fault for not improving his team when he had a chance in summer transfer window. Nevertheless, United would keep on facing these problems, unless Ferguson addresses the real issues, rather than blaming his players for his failures.
If he needs to succeed, it is inevitable that he spent some money in winter transfer window and buy at least one quality midfielder. Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are already getting too old for this job.
