Manchester United looking at Maarten Stekelenburg as Edwin van der Sar's replacement
Manchester United are set to chase http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Maarten-Stekelenburg-c22998 as the replacement for Edwin van der Sar as the veteran goalie confirmed on Thursday that he is set to retire after the end of the 2010-11 English Premier League season.
Van der Sar has been Manchester United first choice goalkeeper for over half a decade now ever since he arrived at the club in 2005 from Fulham FC in the English Premier League. Before van der Sar arrived at Old Trafford, Manchester United had a horrid time in replacing their previous goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel who had parted ways with the club after their treble winning 1999 season.
Manchester United have been keeping track of the Dutch international goalkeeper since the 2010 FIFA World Cup in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/South-Africa-c757 where the Dutch national team made it all the way to the final of the competition only to lose to the Spanish national team in the end. United’s interest in the Maarten was confirmed by their goalkeeping coach Rene Meulensteen who stated that the Dutchman’s name was thrown up as a replacement for Edwin van der Sar in one of the meetings between Sir Alex Ferguson and himself.
Ajax are set to milk Manchester United’s pockets for all they are worth if the English giants are indeed determined to sign the Dutch goalie. However, Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping that any replacements that he signs for Edwin van der Sar will be up to the task of competing for a first team spot against the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Anders-Lindegaard-c5553. Not only that, any newcomer will also find it hard to fill van der Sar’s shoes who has been rock solid between Manchester United’s goalposts.
Rene Meulensteen spoke to the press as he stated, “Stekelenburg is indeed the goalkeeper who is at the top of our wanted list. We have naturally been talking a lot among ourselves about who should replace Van der Sar. Alex Ferguson has spoken about Stekelenburg with Edwin and that does not seem strange to me at all.”
