Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson labels midfielder Paul Scholes “master of the trade”
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson hailed the 35-year-old veteran midfielder Paul Scholes as the best in his field, following Scholes’ first class performance for the Red Devils against Newcastle yesterday. The player showed no signs of aging and was better than many top youngsters in Europe. Scholes produced a strong of long balls and one touch passes, deservingly earning the man of the match award.
Newcastle United made their much awaited premier league return, following relegation in the 08/09 season. The team won the Championship last season to earn a guaranteed spot in the premier league, but was completely outplayed by Ferguson’s XI. Manchester United managed a comfortable 3-0 victory over the Magpies, kicking off the new season in an emphatic fashion. Goals from Dimitar Berbatov, Darren Fletcher and the veteran Ryan Giggs made such a victory possible, as United dominated most of the game. Ryan Giggs scored yet again, maintaining his impressive record of scoring in every premier league season to date.
However, if it was down to single out the performance of one man, it would be Paul Scholes. The player made two assists to the side and was just outstanding in his central midfield role. The midfielder was the mainstay behind the Red Devils impressive victory, making him the most decorated player of the United’s squad yesterday.
Such a performance by the midfielder led to Ferguson claiming that age is no factor to curtail the midfielder’s career, as he is in the form of his life. “Scholes proved again that he is just a master of the trade. His vision and passing range and his willingness to play is marvellous’, stated the Manchester United manager. Ferguson added that Scholes has the hunger to play for the club over the years, and both Scholes and Giggs have been able to retain the thirst to play. Having won so much and played so many matches, both the players still want to keep on playing, which is something truly remarkable. The manager claimed that he hopes for the players to continue playing and expects youngsters to follow their footsteps. Ferguson added that such players are still available in this country and there is nothing to worry about for the selectors.
Coming back to the topic of Paul Scholes, Ferguson stated that the reason behind Scholes long career is his ability to stay fit for longer patches. The midfielder keeps his health in check and had an injury-free last season. This has led him to play for such a long time and the manager stated that if Scholes keeps on proving his fitness, he can play on for many more years to come. The midfielder’s performance overshadowed everyone, including that of Dimitar Berbatov, who opened the scoring for the Red Devils. The striker had come under heavy fire owing to his poor goal scoring from last season, but looks refreshed and rejuvenated.
The player is yet to find the form which led Alex Ferguson to pay over the odds for his services. Berbatov was greatly impressive at his time with the Spurs, which led to Ferguson paying 30.75 million pounds for the Bulgarian. However, the striker had disappointing two seasons with United, but Ferguson still shows faith in the player. Following the Newcastle match, the manager praised the player’s ability, labelling him to be a terrific player, no question asked. The manager added that the player brings the much needed balance and vision to the overall game and he expects Berbatov to score 4 or 5 goals against Newcastle. The manager admitted that the player was a bit clumsy in finishing off the opportunity, but still had a marvellous evening.
Manchester United would want to keep the winning streak going, in order to reclaim the coveted trophy. The Red Devils would be looking to keep form and produce such display against the top four, in order to bolster their chances of winning the domestic competition.
