Manchester United may well be in danger of falling behind

Manchester United, the 18 time Premier League champions, failed to win the league last season, slipping to the second spot. Chelsea managed to de-throne the Red Devils, with just one point in between the two teams.
The team were comprehensively defeated by Chelsea in both the legs and considered as second best to the Blues in every aspect. Many United fans and supporters expected the Red Devils to splash some heavy cash in the summer, with the manager stating that there were some “minor” tweaks which needed to be solved. Some high profile names had been linked with the Devils, even before the transfer window commenced in July.
Manchester United have however been silent in the transfer window so far. Only youngsters Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling joined the club, who had signed deals with the clubs before the transfer window. United needs replacements; desperately. In form striker Wayne Rooney is without a back up partner, Paul Scholes position is up for grabs, while right back position has been exploited easily. Currently, United does not look like the side snatching the title from Chelsea and perhaps challenging Europe’s finest in UEFA Champions League. Without some new top class talent at the squad, United is likely to finish worse than what they managed last season. Both the new signings are ones for the future undoubtedly, and Sir Alex should also be considering the present.
According to Sir Alex Ferguson, he does have the funds to bring a new signing this year, but does not want to pay huge amounts of cash to an inflated transfer market. That may well be a change of strategy from the 69 year old, who has broken the British transfer record six times, very recently when he splashed 30.75 million pounds for Dimitar Berbatov in 2008.
This raises a lot of eye brows over the situation at the club, with many believing that the manager may well only be calming the financial issue down. United are in dire need of some fresh faces, as rivals Manchester City are increasingly becoming a headache. From “noisy neighbours” last season to a team who gives Sir Alex Ferguson headaches, the power seems to be tipping to the City side of Manchester.
City’s manager, Roberto Mancini, is currently busy splashing out the blank cheques given to him by the club’s owner, and has already snapped up Jerome Boateng, David Silva, Yaya Toure and Aleksander Kolarov. All four of these players are among the top players in Europe and will be causing all the teams in the Premier League problems. They are addition to a squad which already boasts some great players. It will be understandable if Ferguson was protecting his beloved club’s image in front of the World, as the Glazer family have undoubtedly put the Red Devils in debt.
Sir Alex Ferguson took over the club’s reins back in 1986 and is to be credited for his efforts. The manager has taken an average Premier League club and transformed it into the most respected one. United is the World’s most valuable club and has the most number of fans on the plant. Under Sir Alex, United has won 11 titles under Sir Alex Ferguson, along with two European cups. The manager is one of the most successful managers of all time and his services to football earned him Knighthood in 1999. The manager is now 69, and it will only be a matter of time before he will have to call it a day.
Ferguson, however, aims to leave a legacy by the time he retires, in which he calls for a secure future and a flourishing present. The manager should be listening to what the squad wants and try to improve on the weakness front. The manager will certainly want to add more trophies to his name and that is what he is here for. To get to trophies, United needs new players and Ferguson should pounce on any opportunity he is presented with.
