Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has fanned the flames ahead of their FA Cup semi-final clash against derby rivals Manchester City.
The player stated that the two Manchester clubs are different in class when it comes to challenging for titles.
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 international said that he is uncertain whether the Citizens should be considered as United’s main rivals given their inability to challenge for top honours.
He said, “When they are fourth or fifth or wherever in the league, I don't think they can be classed as a main rival. Our main rivals are obviously Arsenal and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786. I think City are just a rival because of where they are from.”
After City owner Sheikh Mansour’s cash injection, the Citizens are trying to close the gap on United. The club has spent heavily in recent years to land http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Big-Players-c38635 at Eastlands and the owner would want to see some results.
One such player is former United player Carlos Tevez. The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Argentina-c2841 international has been in fantastic for the Citizens in the ongoing 2010-11 season. He has scored 22 goals in 38 appearances in all competitions in the campaign so far.
It is a major blow for City as Tevez has been ruled out for the all-important FA Cup semi-final against the Red Devils. Tevez sustained a hamstring injured in their last English Premier League fixture against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809.
On the other hand, the Red Devils have problems of their own going into the crunch match at Wembley, as in-from striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Rooney-c36736 is serving a two-match ban.
United certainly have the momentum on their side as they are looking to land the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League titles to the Old Trafford trophy cabinet in the ongoing campaign.
On paper, the Red Devils are clear favourites to progress to the FA Cup final ahead of City. In United’s recent Premier League fixtures against the Citizens, they had the upper hand as they recorded a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford and were able to collect
a point in a 0-0 draw at the Eastlands.
Scholes has urged his teammates to give their best performance on the pitch against City.
“It is painful to lose to City any time. You hate losing against anybody, but City? It's bad,” added the player.
