Manchester United new signing, former Fulham defender Chris Smalling
Manchester United finished second in the Premier League last season, while crashing out of the UEFA Champions League in the quarterfinals at the hands of Germans, Bayern Munich. United lacked a replacement for their star striker Wayne
Rooney, who bagged 34 goals last season. Other strikers Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen failed to fill his boots and United slipped to the second spot with just one point between them and Chelsea.
United signed two players this season, Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling. Hernandez, however, stole the spotlight, when he scored in every match he played for (or against) his new club Manchester United. The fans are excited about the
Mexican, but many have forgotten the other important signing, defender Chris Smalling.
Smalling hovers above everyone at a height of six feet 4 inches, which makes it impossible for him to be overshadowed by anyone. Manchester United’s legendary midfielder Paddy Crerand spoke highly of the defender, stating that Smalling
could come in handy at both ends of the pitch. Paddy stated that if Chris does make it into the starting XI, he would be useful for the team, especially on the corners and free kicks. The midfielder hailed Smalling’s ability in the air, which is going to pose
a huge threat in aerial battles.
The defender was able to score his first goal in a Red shirt, when he headed a ball home against Mexican club Chivas. It was Hernandez’s last appearance for his former club, where he scored a goal against United. Smalling equalised a few
minutes later using his head. The player was overwhelmed with the feeling and would want to do much more for his new club.
While talking to MUTV, Smalling stated that he was stunned when he scored that goal and didn’t know how to celebrate. The youngster stated that it felt great to score, and hoped for more opportunities in the team. Chris Smalling noted
that Sir Alex Ferguson insisted on defenders taking opportunities over corners and crosses.
Goals from defenders are very crucial for any team. Carlos Puyol scored an amazing header against Germany in the semi-finals, which led the team into the final. United’s defenders scored only 3 goals in 56 games, with John O’ Shea, Rafael
and Vidic scoring one each. Vidic was the only centre back to do so, as both Rafael and O’ Shea play as right backs.
United do not employ many stars in their team, but believe in making them. It’s all about team performance for United, and goals scored from anyone playing at any position are equally welcome. Smalling would be eager
to help, but would have to work hard if he aims to make it into the starting XI. Many of the players would be competing for a shot at the first team, and Smalling would have to excel in order to clinch a spot.
Paddy stated that Smalling is only 20-years-old and would be categorized as a kid. Smalling, however, played in most of United’s pre-season games, with the manager perhaps trying out the player and getting the confidence right for the
player. The legendary midfielder stated that when a player of a younger age goes into a new team, it’s hard for him to adapt to the new environment, and he may be shy and quiet about everything.
It would only take a matter of time, however, to fully adapt, and playing a few games with the first team always helps to boost the player’s confidence. Patty emphasized on the fact that a central defender needs to be confidant and vocal
about his opinion, as he needs to coordinate with the players. Therefore, it is very important to get the stiffness and initial introversion out of Smalling.
Paddy stated that even though Smalling is a decent defender, Johnny Evans would obviously be chosen above him. Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic would always be the first choice defenders and Smalling would have to work extremely hard if he
wants to take over such gifted defenders.
