Manchester United not fully utilising Anderson's talent, Brazilian legend Carlos Alberto
Former Brazilian defender, Carlos Alberto Torres, believes that Manchester United are not fully utilising the talent of their midfielder, Anderson Luis Oliveria.
Carlos Alberto insists that Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, should give him a free role in the midfield rather than playing him as a box-to-box midfielder. The former defender added that Anderson’s main quality is his attacking game while United are playing him in a defensive role.
The 66-year-old added that during the early days of his professional career, Anderson drew comparisons with former Barcelona midfielder, Ronaldinho, for his skilful passing and ability to score goals.
Talking to the reporters, Alberto said: “Anderson is a very good player, but I knew him when he played in Brazil and, in my opinion, he is playing in a different way to the way he played back there. He is not playing in his real position.”
“In Brazil, we would like to see him play with freedom on the field because he creates chances and he scores. This is the Anderson that we know in Brazil but here he seems to play more defensively. The coach knows best but that is my opinion.”
The former Santos defender added that Anderson was rated very highly when he was in Brazil, and everyone had high hopes of him. Alberto believes that had he been utilised properly, Anderson could have become one of the best young players in the world.
The former Flamengo manager is hoping that Ferguson changes his mind in the 2011/12 season and allows the midfielder more luxury to make attacking runs.
Alberto rejected the thinking of people who believe that the Brazilians cannot adapt to the English Premier League and believes that a good player can play anywhere in the world. He added that a new player in any league takes time to settle and mould his style of play according to the requirements of the game.
Anderson joined the Red Devils from Porto in 2007 and has made 123 appearances for the club since then, scoring only two goals in the process.
