Manchester United on verge of signing Scholes future replacement
According to Sport.co.uk, Manchester United are on the verge of signing Belgian international, Steven Defour. Alex Ferguson is currently leading the race to sign the player but he is currently facing competition from the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.
Defour has been in the sights of the European elite for almost two years, but the players representative Paul Stefani has told the website that Alex Ferguson is currently way ahead of the rest. However, Carlo Ancelotti, Roy Hodgson and Roberto Mancini are all keeping a close eye on the player as well.
The Belgian international has had twenty four caps for his national team but he is currently recovering from a devastating injury. The player is unlikely to move unless or until he regains or achieves full fitness after his broken leg. The player’s agent Stefani told Sport.co.uk in an interview that “Sir Alex is always interested in Steven (Defour) ever since he sent him the letter when he was struggling with injury. He is interested but we have to wait for an offer to be validated. At the moment he is not 100% because of his long term injury, and now he has to work on recovering from this.”
Stefani was then asked if Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea were monitoring the player’s situation and he said “Yes, they are interested, but many clubs are interested, from Spain, Italy, and Germany. To say that tomorrow he will go to England is not right. There is always interest and every wants to play in the Premier League because it is a very big competition. But, I think we will have to wait until he is a 100 % fit, not 85%.”
Sir Alex has been an admirer of the player for a while now and as he is on the verge of coming back to being a hundred percent fit again. The amount of time he takes to get fit again would determine how long till the fans can watch the Belgian play in the midfield at Old Trafford. The twenty two year old is a fine player who is overflowing with talent and seems to be just the perfect player to fit into the Manchester United roster.
He is like two different types of midfielders in one, he knows how to score his fair share of goals and can create magic out of nothing, his ability to win back possession and get to the ball before anyone else has helped him earn the reputation of being compared to a young Paul Scholes. He might just be the man to replace the legend in the midfields of Old Trafford.
He is currently playing for Standard Liege who will be looking to make a maximum profit of the sale of the player. He is currently being valued at around thirteen and a half million pounds which some might consider to be a bargain. The transfer might even take place this term depending on how long Defour takes to get fully fit again.
