EPL News: Manchester United skipper Gary Neville holds more respect for Liverpool than Manchester City
Manchester United’s legendary defender Gary Neville has claimed that he holds more respect for arch rivals Liverpool than clubs “who throw a load of money” to gain success. There has been intense rivalry between both Liverpool and Manchester United since birth of these two clubs, but Neville has shown more respect towards Liverpool than the high spending clubs.
Although Gary didn’t specifically name a single club when comparing “them” with Liverpool, but it’s a baby’s guess that Manchester City was his main target. Gary Neville was one of the many Manchester born players who loathed the very sight of Liverpool since their childhood but for him to give them more respect than the likes of Manchester City shows the amount of hatred the skipper has for high spending clubs.
In a recent press release, the full back claimed that when he was young, Liverpool won every domestic trophy. The player added that seeing Liverpool winning every time was just ghastly to watch and experience. Neville claimed that jealousy was the least feeling that he had for Liverpool but respected the Merseyside club’s traditions and heritage than some others who have just burst onto the scene by throwing finances at the club.
In last season’s Carling Cup semi-final at the City of Manchester Stadium, Neville spat on former team-mate Carlos Tevez for his “betrayal” in joining rivals Manchester City right after his contract ended with the Red Devils. That action by Light Blues 26 year old goal scoring hero would make him public enemy Numero Uno for this year’s derby to be played on 10th November, at City of Manchester Stadium.
However, Neville aimed to put an end to Liverpool’s history this term, as United lock their sights for their 19th Premier League title. Currently, there is no clear winner as to who is the better club with both sides levelled at 18 top flight titles a piece. The 35 year old has confirmed that winning the coveted title for the 19th time tops the Red Devils priority list this season.
"The motivation has got to be winning the league," stated Gary Neville. Neville added that there was massive motivation of getting the title back this season. The captain stated that last season they didn’t perform at their expected best on numerous occasions and their campaign was hampered by major injuries to the back line. Neville added that if United squad manages to stay fit for most of the season, there is no force on the planet that can stop them from getting the number 19th title this season.
The full back claimed that to become the most successful English club they would have to thwart Liverpool’s achievement and that would be a humongous accomplishment. Such a feat would do justice to the long standing careers of Neville, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and of course manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Continuing In the press release, Neville also shed some light on his own future. At the age of 35, the player would be going into his 18thseason with the club. Neville is also the most capped right back of the country, having featured for the English national side 85 times. Neville attended his first United game when he was just six and is now looking ahead to the day when he finally hangs his legendary boots. Neville is considered one of the most opinionated footballers and football experts have credited him to be a good manager.
However, the Reds Captain claimed that such a role may not suite his overall temperament.
"I am a bit too emotional to be a football manager," claimed the legendary right back. Neville went on stating that his colleagues, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, do have the consistency, patience and tranquillity needed for a successful manager. Neville therefore labelled them to be more suited to the manager job than him.
Neville did state that he was in the process of taking his “A” licence, as that is something wise to do for a person of his age, but added that he doesn’t have the aptitude and patience needed for the manager job.
