Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck on loan to Sunderland
Manchester United striker, Danny Welbeck has joined Sunderland on a season long loan. The 19- year old forward was being linked with the Black Cats all summer long. Now the deal has become official. Welbeck will join former Manchester United centre back Steve Bruce, who is the current first team coach at the Stadium of Light.
The manager is happy with the signing of the 19-year old, who has been impressive with the Red Devils. Welbeck was loaned out due to tough competition from other strikers, with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, Javier Hernandez, Federico Macheda and the newly signed Bebe. Mame Biram Diouf has also been loaned out owing to this competition and Welbeck would be the second striker to be loaned out from Old Trafford.
While talking to the official website, Bruce stated that Welbeck has the world at his feet and the player requires first team experience. That is exactly what he would get if he comes to Sunderland and the manager looks forward to a year with Danny Welbeck. Bruce claimed that the player was of a different kind as compared to his current squad and it was the manager’s job to name the 25 men for the coming six months. Bruce added that any manager would need to name a squad which is well balanced and right for the club overall.
The manager praised the player’s ability, claiming that the 19-year old has superior ball control and the pace required to beat the back line. Welbeck would be hoping to feature in the premier league opener with Sunderland, when they host Birmingham City at the Stadium of Light.
"I'm delighted to be able to come to Sunderland - I've come here to get some experience and I'm looking forward to it”, stated the 19-year old English international.
The player added that Sunderland is a big club, which has been in the top flight of English football for a couple of years now. Welbeck added that he’s relishing to make an impression and is thirsty to score goals. Danny made five appearances with the Red Devils last season before being loaned out to Preston North End for the second half of the season.
The teenager then returned to Old Trafford and featured in the Red Devil’s pre-season in North America. The teenager made some impressive performances, but failed to be a part of Sir Alex’s plans for the coming season. Ferguson claimed that Welbeck needed some more first team experience and decided to loan out the player. Sunderland would be the perfect breeding ground for the player, as he is expected to feature regularly in the first team. Such experience would help the player in the long term and thus a deal was finalized with the Black Cats.
Danny will be expected to partner former Manchester United team mate, Fraizer Campbell at Sunderland, who is his long term friend. Both of them had a good relationship while in the reserves squad at United and their friendship was the major reason behind Welbeck’s choice. Ferguson was also convinced by long time friend Steve Bruce, who played under Ferguson for over ten years. Welbeck confirmed that there were some other premier league clubs who were interested in his services, but was convinced by Bruce. The player added that Steve spoke highly of him and guaranteed him first team opportunities. Welbeck was therefore looking forward to be playing in a Sunderland jersey and looks to give his all at the Stadium of Light.
Welbeck claimed that he knew quite a number of players at the club, with Campbell being his close friend. Danny is also familiar with Phil Bardsley, John Mensah and Nedum Onuoha, having trained with them in the English Camp. Owing to the familiar faces, the 19-year old looks forward to playing with all of them.
