Manchester United striker Michael Owen hit with hamstring injury
Manchester United striker Michael Owen will be out of action for at least a few weeks due to a hamstring injury. The United forward injured himself in training ahead of Tuesday night’s Carling Cup match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Owen was expected to start the game against Wolves, but he could not make himself available for selection.
The 30-year-old’s last appearance for the Red Devils was at The Stadium of Light against Sunderland FC, in a scoreless draw in the start of October. Michael’s first start to this season’s English Premier League was cut short when
was substituted at the half-time in that game.
The English striker’s only other start was in the Carling Cup 3rd
round tie against Scunthorpe United, where he managed to score a brace in a 5-2 win for United.
Michael Owen moved to Old Trafford from Newcastle United at the end of 2008/2009 season. Since his surprise move to Manchester, Owen has been hampered with injuries. The current no.7 at United has managed only 12 goals in 38 appearances
for the club, and has looked a shadow of his former self.
Owen suffered a hamstring injury in last season’s Carling Cup final, and consequently missed the rest of the season. The latest injury sustained by the player may suggest that his football career may be nearing its end.
However, the former Newcastle, Liverpool FC and Real Madrid player, has dismissed such claims and remains confident about his return to action.
He said, “I got injured in the cup final and then subsequently this season I was in the squad for the first 10 games or so. But unfortunately because of a training ground injury the other day I'm going to be out for the next few
weeks, which is disappointing. It's all part and parcel of football. Everyone gets injured. Hopefully, I can come back and be as strong as ever.”
With the arrival of fresh faces such as Javier Hernandez and Bebe at Old Trafford, Owen has seen limited first-team action. The striker has been tipped to leave Manchester United and join Aston Villa in the January transfer window.
But that move might be put into jeopardy if he fails to recover from the injury. Owen proved his mettle as a world-class finisher at his time at Merseyside under the management of Gerard Houllier.
