Meanwhile, Wigan want Tom Cleverley from Manchester Untied on loan and are looking to seal a £2million move for Chelsea’s Franco di Santo. West Bromwich Albion want to sign Aston Villa’s Steve Sidwell for £3million, and they are also holding talks with Paul Scharner, the former Wigan player, who is available on a free transfer.

Having sold Zlatan Ibrahimovic to AC Milan, Barcelona have announced they will make one more signing, and Manchester City’s Robinho and Valencia’s Juan Mata are at the top of their wanted list. City, meanwhile, want Watford ‘keeper Scott Loach, as current No.2 ‘keeper Shay Given looks set to leave Eastlands.

Sunderland are close to sealing a deal for Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan for £15million, while Newcastle will bid £8million for Ricky van Wolfswinkel of Utrecht.

Birmingham City have been offered Spartak Moscow’s Martin Jiranek, while Reading midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson is wanted by German side Hoffenheim. Stoke City are in talks with Eidur Gudjohnsen, and Blackpool have made a last-minute bid to sign Adam Hammill.
