Manchester United will assess Wayne Rooney fitness
Manchester United has confirmed the club will take a look at Wayne Rooney's fitness ahead of the Premier League game with Wigan Athletic this weekend.
Rooney has been suffering from an ankle problem, which has prevented him from playing. He trained alone in the United State last week and the club will now examine whether he can play any part in the game
against Wigan.
"Wayne has had a good week in Oregon. He's done well.
We have to assess if he is ready to get into the first team. That is an area which I couldn't give you an answer because the only evidence we will have is on the training field," said Manchester United manager Sir Alex
Ferguson at the Aspire4Sport conference in Dohar.
Rooney is likely to be included in the Manchester United squad as quickly as possible because the club needs added fire power in attack. He may be subjected to a fitness test
before the Wigan game and the best case scenario is that he'll probably start from the bench for the match.
Ferguson says it's difficult to resist the temptation of throwing him back into the team but one he has to cope with. The risk is making the ankle injury worse if Rooney plays
prematurely.
"I think the evidence will be on the football pitch," added Ferguson.
Rooney's return to the United team is highly anticipated by both the media and the fans because it was not too long ago when the striker said he wanted to leave the club because
he had doubts over the future.
The only way for Rooney to put this part of his career into the past is to start playing again. Therefore it's very important he takes care of himself over the next two days.
Betting advice
Rooney will not start the match with Wigan this weekend. However, if he does feature then it won't be long until he starts a game. Back him to score in any match he starts in,
regardless of the fact he's only got one Premier League goal so far this season.
