It has been another exciting week of footballing action in the Barclays Premier League with a number of sides picking up important results.
Liverpool continued their unbeaten run at home with a much needed win against Queens Park Rangers, while Manchester United seemed to have put their disappointment of crashing out of the UEFA Champions League with a 4-1 drubbing of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The result of the gameweek though had to be Chelsea bringing highflying Manchester City’s unbeaten run in the Premier League to an end.
All that is well and good, yet the only thing that matters to the managers in the Fantasy Premier League is how many points their players managed to rack up over the weekend.
Below are the highest scoring players in each of their positions.
Goal Keeper – Michel Vorm – 12 Points
Yes, the reader read that right. Michel Vorm, the Swansea City goal keeper managed to earn 12-points for managers that had the Dutchman in between their virtual goal posts. Apart from keeping a clean sheet and making six saves for another two points, Vorm also managed to save a penalty.
Defenders
Phillip Bardsley – 9 points
The Sunderland defender may not have kept a clean sheet, yet he set up both of his side’s goals which earned him a surprise six points. Throw in the Bonus point with the Minutes Played and a tally of 9-points is not too bad.
Neil Taylor and Steven Caulker – 6 points
Basically any defender who kept a clean sheet and was not on the receiving end of a booking makes is up there with being the top defender for the gameweek. Yet, with the price that the two Swansea defenders have it would be wrong for the recognition to go elsewhere.
Midfielders
Luis Nani and Antonio Valencia
Manchester United put to rest all the talk of whether the exit from the Champions League would affect their Premier League campaign by giving Wolves a good old thrashing. Two players who were at the heart of the massacre were Nani and Valencia who earned 18-points and 12-points for their efforts respectively.
Matthew Etherington
There are very few midfielders who can score two goals in the same match but Stoke City’s Matthew Etherington proved that on his day he is more than capable of joining that particular list.
Victor Moses – 13 points
Wigan Athletic have a star on their hands as do a number of Premier League Managers as Moses managed to amass 13-points for anyone who had laid their trust in him. A goal, an assist and three bonus points took his tally into double figures.
Strikers
Grant Holt – 13 points
It is not very often that one sees a Norwich City player among the best players in a gameweek, yet Holt’s two goals meant that he would be an exception on this occasion.
Wayne Rooney – 13 points
Finally returning to form after a fairly lengthy absence from the crème of the Fantasy Premier League, Rooney’s tally of 13-points not only made a fair number of Fantasy Premier League managers happy, it also did the same for a number of Manchester United fans.
Demba Ba – 13 points
Where Newcastle United find all these talented strikers is a mystery worthy of attention. Ba continues his devastating form with another fine performance and 13 points in the bag.
