Manchester United won’t be buying much in the January transfer window; Hargreaves and Valencia's return awaited
Despite all the drama and speculations surrounding Wayne Rooney’s stay at Manchester United, it has been revealed that the club will not be buying much during the winter transfer window. This was made public by Sir Alex Ferguson,
the manager of Manchester United, while speaking to the press.
It was previously revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson was only able to stop Rooney from leaving the club after pushing the Glazer family for some extra funds. Those funds, which are rumoured to be around £50 million, were provided
only to stop Wayne Rooney from leaving United. The English striker previously said that United lacked real quality to challenge at the top. Nevertheless, once Ferguson had the money in his pocket, it was reportedly easy for him to convince Rooney into signing
an extended contract.
However, in another turn of events, Ferguson told the press that he would not be buying much during the winter transfer window. He said that this decision has to be taken despite having funds available for transfers. However, Ferguson
hopes that Owen Hargreaves and Antonio Valencia would return in winter, which would be enough for the second part of Manchester United’s Premier League season.
The major problem being faced by United is in the midfield area. There is hardly any quality in the holding midfield position, and there are no attacking midfield players except Nani. However, the quality players are available
in shape of Valencia and Hargreaves, who are currently sitting out because of injuries. Valencia is expected to return to first team action at the start of February, while Hargreaves would be there as well around that time. If both players click after being
on the sidelines for months, it would solve many of Ferguson’s problems.
In reality, it is always hard for a player to make a comeback after prolonged injuries. At least, for a few weeks, he would not even be fit enough to play a part for the entirety of the match. Also, both these players are expected
to return sometime around February, and there is still a long time before that. Until then, it is always better for the manager to have an extra option available if these players’ return is delayed by something unforeseen.
The real problem with the winter transfer window is that many players are often cup-tied. Therefore, even if you buy a player, he would not be able to play in European matches, because he had already started the competition with
a different club. This problem was also mentioned by Ferguson during his press interview. However, the real goal for Manchester United, right now, is not winning a Champions League trophy. The goal is to survive in the English Premier League, retaining their
normal Champions League spot, especially when the competition is getting tougher and tougher.
Manchester United’s squad has been on a down road for a very long time. Some of their star players, including Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Edwin Van der Sar and Gary Neville are not getting any younger. Ferguson had claimed that he
was aware of that fact and he had plans to solve such an issue. However, it seems that Manchester United has not been planning to replace these players at all. Now, if any of these players retire, United would face problems with finding replacements. This
would not have happened if Ferguson had been planning for a long time.
In short, Manchester United’s fans would have to wait till the next summer transfer window before they can see some real quality being injected into their club. Until that time, they will have to rely on their average squad and
the exceptional skills of Ferguson, in order to fight in the English Premier League.
