Manchester United’s Darren Fletcher believes Javi ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez has a lot more to offer
Manchester United has a rich history of producing world class players from practically unknown youngsters. Cristiano Ronaldo was a prime example; the Portuguese star was signed by
Ferguson in 2003 when no one had ever heard of the 17 year old winger who was playing for Sporting Lisbon.
Sir Alex has been excellent with identifying talent and his latest summer signing, Mexican striker Javier Hernandez, is believed by many to be one for the future.  The former Chivas player made an immediate impact in the
big Champions League away game against Valencia. Before that goal there had been a huge sense of expectation on Hernandez and now it is bound to escalate even further.
One of his team mates, Darren Fletcher, believes that there is a lot more to come from Hernandez and he would go on to be one of the best players ever for Manchester United.
Although he was a Mexican international, hardly anyone had heard of Javier. He joined United before going to
South Africa for the World Cup at a cost of 7 million pounds. Hernandez produced some fantastic performances in
South Africa for Mexico which raised expectations even more.
Hernandez was also very impressive in the pre-season tour with United where he also got a chance to play for his old club Chivas. Javier also scored for United in the Community Shield against
Chelsea. The goal may not have been the cleanest as the final touch came off his face, but he did get the monkey of scoring his first goal off his back.
Till now Hernandez has not had too many opportunities in the Red of United, but he is still able to impress whenever he does get on the field. However, getting the winner against
Valencia will surely propel his confidence to new levels.
Fletcher, who was part of the team in 1-0 win over
Valencia, believes that Javier would deliver more of the same for Red Devils in the future.
"Javier got his head down and finished it fantastically," said the
Scotland captain.
"He showed he is going to be a great player for Manchester United.”
"He is young and still getting used to the way we play. But he has come in from
Mexico and is a real talent."
Another good thing that came out of that win was that United could finally expect goals to come from someone other than Wayne Rooney, or Dimitar Berbatov. The English striker will be out of action for 3 weeks following the
reoccurrence of his ankle injury. Dimitar Berbatov, the other frontline striker for United, has also been in good touch this season, and with Hernandez showing promise missing Rooney’s spell on the injury table may not be such a big problem for
Ferguson anymore.
Last season Manchester United found themselves unluckily out of the tournament after two hard-fought semi-final legs against Bayern Munich. In 2009, United made it to the final but were outplayed by
Barcelona. The Red Devils last won the Champions League in 2008, when in a breathtaking penalty shootout they managed to beat fellow Premier League team Chelsea.
Fletcher believes that United are looking good in
Europe and should do well from here on in.
"We are back in a good position," said Fletcher.
"We were disappointed to draw at home to Rangers and we knew going to
Valencia was going to be difficult.
“But we got three points to put us back top of the group.”
"The target is always 10 points. That is what it remains."
