Manchester United’s Edwin Van Der Sar wants players to learn from mistakes of 2009 UCL final
Manchester United’s long serving goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar, has expressed his desire to finish one step ahead of their opposition in the final of UEFA Champions League. He also urged his side not to repeat the mistakes they committed in 2009 which led
to Barcelona’s win in the final.
Both United and Barcelona are due to lock horns in the final of the competition on Saturday, May 28, at Wembley. The last time these two teams met in the final of the same competition was in 2009 and the Catalan giants emerged victorious by a 2-0 score line.
Van der Sar believes that the Red Devils have a much more composed outfit then it was in the past and scripted a better result for United comparing that to the result they witnessed a couple of years back.
The veteran was ecstatic at his team’s outstanding performance against the German club, Schalke’04, and added that a 6-1 aggregate win signals the strength of his side. He also hailed the performance of youngster Darren Gibson, who was given a chance to
feature in the starting line-up and proved his worth by scoring the second goal for United.
Sir Alex Ferguson made nine changes to his team from 1-0 defeat against Arsenal at the weekend. The 40-year-old was delighted to see the mettle of his bench players in absence of star players like http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rio-Ferdinand-c31173.
Talking to the reporters, Van Der Sar said, “[It was] perfect, of course after the first leg we were quite well set up so we were able to make some changes and keep the majority of players fresh for Sunday.”
“You saw the emotion from Barcelona yesterday and maybe our celebrations were more subdued, it’s a big rivalry of course Madrid and Barca. This was a game we comfortably won in the end.” added the shot-stopper
The Dutchman is set to play his last game in a United Jersey in the Champions League final against Barcelona and he wants to end his career on a high by lifting the trophy for his team.
