Manchester United’s Michael Carrick optimistic about the new Premier League season
Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick believes that competition in the Premier League has become more intense than ever, and his team has to win everything in their way to win the league at the end of the season.
Last season, United lost 8 matches and missed out on the title by just one point in the end, as Chelsea ended up crowned the Premier League champions.
Chelsea look good even this season; they started the campaign with a 6 nil demolition of West Bromwich on the opening day. Carrick said that there is simply no room for slipups for them anymore. He said that last season was quite unusual in a way that United and Chelsea both dropped significant number of points; that is the reason the battle went on till the end.
Michael Carrick, who played for England in the 2010 World Cup, said that the World Cup was a disappointment for all of them, and most of the players in the squad (who are not even from England) did not have a good World Cup campaign. He said, however, that it may act as a positive influence on the team. The former Tottenham man said that the hunger on the players’ part to prove themselves to their fans once again may be the thing that drives the team.
While commenting on the new singings by the Red Devils, he said that Hernandez is a rare talent, and judging by what he has seen of him in the pre-season matches and the Community Shield match, he is very excited about playing alongside him. Carrick said that Wayne Rooney is also very happy to have a strike-partner who has pace and can last the whole 90 minutes with the same amount of aggression. The midfielder said that the team does not need too many reinforcements and Ferguson has made the right decision in not signing too many players this summer.
Carrick added that Manchester United is a club where fans expect nothing less than a title every season, which he admitted was difficult to win every year. However, that expectation also gives the players motivation to go out and give it their all every year. Michael Carrick, who signed for Manchester United for 16 million pounds in 2007, said that the manager has made sure that the team does not reflect too much on the season gone by, but does make sure that they do not repeat the same mistakes.
Carrick, when asked about the club’s owners (the Glazer family), said that the fans clearly have something against the Glazer family. He added that in truth, there are no problems between the team management and the owners. He went on to say that Sir Alex was very happy with the funds available to him and it was his own decision not to sign too many players as he did not feel the need for it. Carrick said that the fact that since the buyout the club is under debt is a business problem that the owners have made sure does not affect the club. He added that he is not up to date with all the financial dealings, but knows that the manager is happy with it and so is the rest of the team. Carrick reassured everyone that the club does not face any problems as far as transfer funds are concerned, and the fans should not be bothered either.
The midfielder reiterated that Manchester United have only one thing on their mind, that is to win back the title, and he has no doubts that the Premier League trophy will once again be heading to Old Trafford in May next year.
