Manchester United striker Michael Owen has revealed that he is excited at the prospect of being a part of the squad that wins the Barclays Premier League trophy. The former England international has had an illustrious career, but he has not yet had the honour
of lifting the Premier League title or the UEFA Champions League crown.
Many of Owen’s appearances for the Red Devils this season have come from the substitute’s bench. The striker has had just nine starts this campaign, and he still needs to feature one more time to qualify for a medal should United go on to win the League.
It seems almost inevitable that Manchester United will be crowned the Premier League Champions this season. The Red Devils have a commanding six-point lead at the moment, a lead which could increase to nine points by the end of the weekend, if things go
their way.
Michael Owen will be happy to accept the winner’s medal, but admits that much of the work was done by others in the squad.
Speaking on the matter, the rarely-seen striker said, “There are players who would be 10 times more deserving of a Premier League medal in this team than me, so it is not as though I will be flashing it around. But there is no point being embarrassed about
accepting something you have been part of. I didn't get two medals for scoring two goals in the FA Cup final in 2001.”
He added, “I have won plenty in my career but I have not won the two big ones (Premier League and Champions League). That would complete the set.”
United are also on track to win the Champions League title. They are all but through to the final after defeating German club, Schalke 04, by two goals to nil in the first-leg of the semifinal. Michael Owen is aware that he will most probably be on the bench
for the Champions League final, but he dreams of coming on as a late substitute and scoring the winning goal in that match.
Manchester United are currently leading the Barclays Premier League table with 73 points.
