Manchester United’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rio-Ferdinand-c31173 still haunted by 2009 Champions League final defeat – UCL news
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has revealed that he is still haunted by his side’s defeat to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 in the 2009 UEFA Champions League final in Rome. The Red Devils have a shot at revenge this season, as the upcoming final of the 2011 Champions
League final is going to be contested by the same two teams.
When Barcelona and United last met in the tournament, the Red Devils were the reigning Champions, and they were looking to become the first team in history to retain the prestigious trophy. However, the Premier League team that beat all pretenders to the
crown just didn’t show up for the match. Barcelona completely thrashed a lacklustre United in the final at Rome, winning the encounter 2-0.
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was a part of the squad that played in the Champions League final in 2009, and though he never watched the match afterwards, he still recalls every incident of that match in vivid detail. The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 international
admitted that his side deserved to lose the final based on their performance on the night.
Recalling that night in Rome, Ferdinand said, “Matches like that are hard to forget. It is clear in your head. If you want to sit and think about games like that they come up quite easily. I have rerun it in my head a few times and we just never played.
We weren't Manchester United.”
He added, "On the way back we were sitting there thinking 'if only we had gone out and been the real Manchester United, it would have been different'.”
However, the England international is hoping to make amends for past mistakes this time around. Manchester United and Barcelona will go head-to-head in this season’s Champions League final on May 28. Ferdinand insists that his side will give it their all
in the final at Wembley.
Speaking ahead of the match, he said, “They always say you don't want to come off the pitch with any regrets. There were regrets that night (in the 2009 final). This time we will give a better account of ourselves."
Manchester United are currently leading the Barclays Premier League standings with 76 points.
