Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney apologizes to fans
Wayne Rooney has apologized to Manchester United fans who questioned the striker’s loyalty to the club.
Rooney threatened to quit last month after the player expressed his differences with the club over United’s inability to sign new players. However, a meeting with manager Sir Alex Ferguson was enough to change the English star’s decision to leave
Old Trafford, and convince him to sign a new 5-year contract with the Red Devils.
Wayne spoke after United’s match against Scottish side Rangers FC in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday. Rooney scored the only goal of the night that enabled his side to emerge victorious and cruise to the next round of the competition.
The 25-year old was ecstatic after scoring his first goal since his return from injury, when he successfully converted in from the spot-kick.
He said, “I feel like I have apologised to the fans but everyone keeps saying that I haven't. If that is the case, then I apologise for my side of things. I have made my point clear since I signed my contract that I am committed to this club
for the long term. I want to be successful here.”
During his transfer saga, the former Everton FC striker was heavily tipped to join city rivals Manchester City. However, Wayne said a move to City was not on his mind, if he had chosen to leave Old Trafford.
Now that he is committed to United, Rooney is determined to focus on his game and return back to top-form. United’s No.10 scored 34 goals in 44 appearances for the club in all competitions last season.
“Everyone is saying that I was definitely going to Manchester City. Believe me if I had gone it wouldn't have been in England. You see so many players leave this club and not do so well so I am delighted to have stayed. I spoke with the manager
and David Gill. They reassured me the club was moving forward and from that it took maybe two or three hours to negotiate my contract and sign it. I am just happy it is all over now. I want to put it behind me and look forward.”
Manchester United, who remain unbeaten in the English Premier League this season, host Blackburn Rovers on Saturday at Old Trafford. Alex Ferguson’s men are currently level on 28 points with Chelsea FC after 14 games.
