Manchester United's Wayne Rooney could be set for extended spell on sidelines

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney could be set for a longer spell on the sidelines than had been expected.

The England international was estimated to be out for around three weeks with an ankle injury he sustained in a training session. He is currently on holiday in Dubai resting the joint and trying to speed up the recovery.

However, the club’s manager Sir Alex Ferguson has suggested the 25-year-old may be out of action for a longer period.

When asked if Rooney was three weeks away from his return, Ferguson told reporters that: "I think it may be longer. There is no recovery, it is just rest. Before he went away we did his remedial in terms of what we could do at the time. Thereafter, rest — we're
quite happy with that."

The player has not featured in any of the club’s last three games, with his last appearance for the club coming in the 2-2 draw with west Bromwich Albion on 16 October as a substitute.
Aiming for return against Manchester City
He had been aiming for a return to first-team football against English Premier League title rivals Manchester City on 10 November.

City were one of the clubs tipped to make a move for Rooney when he revealed his intention to leave United. However, the attacker changed his mind and opted to instead pen an improved five-year contract with the Red Devils.

The player has been making headlines on both the front and back pages of newspapers this season, with a lack of form and fitness contributing to several poor performances on the pitch. He has only netted one goal in the EPL this term — a spot-kick in the 3-0
victory over West Ham United in August.

Rooney has also been at the centre of media attention over accusations regarding his private life.
