Manchester United’s need to spend in the summer
On the face of it, it does not seem that there is anything wrong with the Manchester United squad. After all they only finished one point behind the eventual winners Chelsea and pushed them to the last day of the league.
Even after the high profile departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez in the summer, being crippled by injuries throughout the season, not having a defensive midfielder for the whole season, playing with a make shift CDM for the entirety of the league and having all first choice defenders at one point with the likes of Carrick and Fletcher playing as centre backs and even then they stood defiant in the face of their opponents and refused to budge yet they came up short in the end.
Had it not been for an act of sheer stupidity by a highly inexperienced yet equally talented Rafael Da Silva’s sending off in the second leg of their quarter final against Bayern Munich at Old Trafford, the red devils might have been preparing for the ultimate foot balling showdown in Madrid, rather than mulling over what could or might have been.
Having successfully defended their Carling cup trophy can by no means mean that it had been a successful season at the club as judging by the standards that they have set over the past two decades this was anything but.
So before Fergie heads off to the south of France for his favourite holiday location of Cap Ferrat; the Scott has some brainstorming to do.
Wholesale changes are not needed in fact are evolution rather than revolution and it has been the order of things at Manchester United. Come the summer the fans can expect some high profiles departures that are deemed surplus to requirements at the club.
Micheal Carrick, Ben Foster, Anderson and Dimitar Berbatov might be on their way out of the Manchester club.
With Ferguson having already spent 20 million pounds on the likes of Cris Smalling, Javier Hernandez and Mame Briam Diouf, there is still some trimming and chopping that needs to be done.
Foster has failed to establish himself as the long-term replacement for the Dutch vetran Edvin Van Der Sar and With Birmingham offering 6 million for Foster the goalie might already be on his way to St. Andrews and France’s Hugo Lloris is widely speculated to be coming into the fold at Old Trafford at the price of around 20 million.
Ferguson has always preferred to invest in younger players and nurturing them into superstars of Tomorrow except for the 27 year old Bulgarian Berba who failed to live up to is price tag and in many circles is considered to the root cause of United’s failings this season as he failed to provide a trust worthy second choice striker to the hot in form Wayne Rooney. So despite being news of the Bulgarian vowing to revive his career at united the lanky striker seems certain to be on his way out and his replacement will be Fergie’s first choice Los Blanco outcast, the French Karim Benzema or the Spanish sensation David Villa from a cash stripped Valencia.
Having claimed all season that Fergie has the 80 million kitties from the Ronaldo sale available to him but he did not spend, as he in his own words would not be held at ransom to the inflated market prices.
This time the Scott will surely have to splurge some cash if he wishes to bring some silverware to united next season.
One Scott leader, for whom prudence was a watchword, has already paid the price after being forced out of 10 Downing Street, Fergie on the other hand may not suffer the same fate but his own prudence will count for nothing if the red devils fail to land a major trophy next season.
